„For me, the main thing is nature. I have to see it. I have to notice something, experience it, and then I store it. No sketches. Occasionally I make a small, stamp-size sketch of a composition, just to have an idea. Then I go and get a plate. No preparatory drawings. And if I forget the motif, it was not worth remembering.

I have always been interested in etching, since the beginning. To a certain degree, it was experimental, which excited me. So, I more-less stuck to it. When I work on the plate, I’m simplifying and leaving things out. That’s the exploratory part. I’m debating over the plate where it needs to be darker or lighter. When I started, I used to correct and re-do. Now I carry a clear picture in my mind beforehand, I can execute it directly.“

Hana Storchova | born 1936 in Prague

Curator Alena Laufrova:

Hana Storchová predominantly uses etching and aquatint techniques, printing in black and white or in monochromatic color. Her poetic compositions are inspired by nature and by landscape. Sometimes she takes a detail from nature, elevating it beyond its representation, showing it in a different context.

Hana Storchová´s lyrical prints are quiet poems exploring the world of dream, introducing the viewer to the landscape of delicate relations. She is the successful artist of a number of scientific illustrations of plants, butterflies, and others. She benefits from her knowledge of nature in her printmaking and transforms it into authentic expression encrypted into a visually clear message.
